A few weeks ago, I attended a fundraiser for Sowing Seeds, an educational project started by Chef Kelly Liken here in Eagle County to teach kids how to grow food while learning about nutrition.
Taking place in local schools, the veggies grown by the kids in the greenhouse are used in the cafeteria and scraps are composted. This not only teaches students about the life cycle of plants and vegetables, but also about accountability and reward.
The cookout at Crazy Mountain Brewery in Edwards, CO, was to raise money for another greenhouse; tickets were $25 and included two beers and food.
Kelly manned the grill while her husband Rick played sous chef and maître d‘, slicing flank steak and greeting guests. Even though we had a bit of rain, the party just moved into the brewery and everyone continued the festivities, eating corn on the cob, watermelon salad, steak and other cookout cuisine.
More than just a fundraiser, it was an opportunity for members of community to learn more about the Sowing Seeds program and enjoy a few pintes for a great cause.
If you missed the fundraiser at Crazy Mountain Brewery, there’s another one tonight, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Bonfire Brewing Co. in Eagle, CO. Tickets are $25 and include food and two Bonfire Brewery beers.
